What is a yellow diamond?

A yellow diamond is a diamond that displays a noticeable yellow body colour.

Unlike a traditional colourless diamond, where the goal is generally to minimise colour, yellow diamonds are valued for the presence and intensity of their colour.

The yellow colour occurs naturally when nitrogen is present within the diamond's crystal structure. The amount and arrangement of nitrogen influences the colour you see, resulting in everything from subtle hints of yellow to intensely saturated golden hues.

Natural yellow diamonds are part of the broader category of fancy colour diamonds — diamonds that exhibit a colour beyond the normal D–Z colour range.

 

 

How are yellow diamonds graded?

Yellow diamonds are graded differently from traditional colourless diamonds.

While colourless diamonds are graded on a D–Z scale, fancy colour diamonds are assessed according to three key characteristics: hue, tone and saturation.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) generally uses the following colour classifications for fancy colour diamonds:

• Fancy Light
• Fancy
• Fancy Intense
• Fancy Vivid
• Fancy Deep
• Fancy Dark

The most desirable classification depends on the individual diamond and the colour you are looking for. A Fancy Intense yellow diamond, for example, can have a beautifully rich colour without being quite as saturated as a Fancy Vivid.

There is no single "best" yellow. The appeal comes down to the balance of colour, cut, shape and personal preference.

 

What makes a yellow diamond valuable?

Like all diamonds, the value of a yellow diamond is influenced by several factors - but colour plays a particularly important role.

Generally, as the colour becomes more intense and saturated, rarity and value can increase. Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid yellow diamonds can therefore command significant premiums.

Some yellow diamonds have a pure, bright yellow appearance, while others have secondary hues such as orange or green.

Cut

Cut determines how a diamond interacts with light.

A beautifully cut yellow diamond can appear vibrant and luminous, choosing cut particularly important. Certain shapes can also enhance the perception of colour.

Carat

Larger natural yellow diamonds are rarer, which can influence their value.

However, size isn't everything. A smaller diamond with exceptional colour can be far more captivating than a larger stone with weaker colour.

Clarity

Clarity remains important, but it is considered differently in fancy colour diamonds.

Because colour is the star of the stone, a yellow diamond doesn't necessarily need to have the same clarity characteristics you might prioritise in a colourless diamond.

How do you choose a yellow diamond?

Choosing a yellow diamond is ultimately about finding the stone that makes you stop and look twice.

2. Consider the shape.
Different cuts interact with colour in different ways. Compare several shapes before deciding.
